Aravalli Hills (mountains) cause very low amount of rainfall in Thar desert

Explanation:

  • The Thar Desert or the Great Indian Desert, is a "vast arid region" in the north-western part of the Indian sub-continent which covers an area of 200000 km2
  • The Thar Desert stretches from "the Aravalli Hill"s in the north-east, "the Great Rann of Kutch" along the "coast" & the "alluvial plains" of the river Indus in the west & northwest.
  • The desert is mostly covered by large dunes of sand shifting from the alluvial plains and the coastline, which are sediments. Because of the strong winds before the start of the "monsoon", the sand is very mobile.
  • The desert is found in the belt of trade winds blowing from the north-east  in the "northern hemispehre" and to the south-east to the "southern hemisphere".
  • These winds are blowing from east to west. These winds "shed their moisture"  in the north-east of the nation  because the region is hilly. When they reach the Thar Desert, almost all their moisture is lost, eventually resulting in little or no rain in the region.
  • The "Luni River" is the only river which is "integrated" into the desert. Rainfall is limited  each  year, usually falling from July-September
