The first proper university in Europe was the University of Bologna which was established in 1088. It was set up as a guild or group of students who learned canon and civil law.
The University of Paris was set up between 1150 and 1170. Theology was taught there.
So the early universities fulfilled the need for learning canon and civil law and theology.
