Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, also known as Rajarshi Shahu was highly regarded as a true democrat and social reformer. He was the First Maharaja of the princely state of Kolhapur, Maharashtra.

The Maharaja was greatly influenced by the intellect of young Bhimrao Ambedkar and his ideas regarding untouchability.

He had donated Rs. 2,500, which was considered an enormous amount during that time, to Dr. Ambedkar when he started his newspaper ‘Mooknayak’ on 31 January 1921. The Maharaja contributed furthermore later for the same cause till his death in 1922.

Hope it helps!
