Answer: Newton's second law of motion.

As the object was about to hit the hard surface the object has some momentum and on hitting the hard surface the momentum becomes zero so a Momentum change has taken place now second law of motion of Newton says that the rate of change of momentum is directly proportional to force applied. Now, the momentum in this becomes zero in a very less amount of time so the rate of change of momentum is quite high the force applied on the person will be high too and the person is hurt.
