Rutherford expected that most of the alpha particles would deflect back but many particles passed throgh the foil without being scattered and only one out of two thousand particle rebounded

This was absolutely unexpected results of the observation that made rutherford conclude that a lot of space inside an atom is empty and the mass is concentrated in very small size called the nucleus of the atom
