Detergents work very well in hard water. Because detergents do not react with Ca and Mg ions to form insoluble precipitate

Detergents work effectively in hard water. This is because hard water contain salts such as Magnesium and Calcium. When detergents are dissolved in water it effectively cleans cloth without the formation of an insoluble substance know as Scum.
Whereas, if one tries to clean with soaps in hard water then it will lead to formation of Scum.
