The reduction of NADP+ to NADPH +  H+ takes place in non-cyclic photophosphorylation.

As the process is not cyclic the electrons do not come back. Therefore water is needed so that electrons could be produced.

NADP+,  a lower energy form picks up a high energy electron and a proton and converts to NADPH.
