AP or arithmetic progression is a sequence where difference between consecutive terms is constant.

Given sequence is a, a^2, a^3, a^4

difference between a^2 and a is (a^2-a)

difference between a^3 and a^2 is (a^3-a^2)

We see that both difference values are not equal.

Hence given sequence is not an AP.

sandyrpgmcpcntdt: What is the difference between them
lublana: since value of a is not given so we can't evaluate that further but we can clearly see that (a^2-a) and (a^3-a^2) are not equal. that's why they are different.
