• However, during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1968, the "Cold War alliance" in the U.S. government broke up. The Vietnam issue was divided between democrat delegates from around the nation. The long-lasting presumption that the USA must stay in war was questioned by the group headed by Eugene McCarthy, a dedicated anti-war candidate. As the debate on the Convention floor heated, wars broke out, delegates and reporters were beat and struck. The delegates on the Status Quo side led by Hubert Humphrey, the then Vice President, dominated the events, but the convention events badly damaged the party that went.
• Meanwhile, on the streets of Chicago, several thousand anti-war protesters gathered to show their support for McCarthy and the U.S. withdrawal of troops from Vietnam. Chicago Mayor Richard Daley deployed 12,000 police officers and called in another 15,000 state and federal officers to contain the protesters. The situation then rapidly spiraled out of control, with the policemen severely beating and gassing the demonstrators, as well as newsmen and doctors who had come to help.
• President Lyndon B. Johnson, leader of the party, had previously said he would not seek a new presidential term. He decided to concentrate on a potential solution to the Vietnam war.  Since anti-war democrats had no candidate, they protested at the convention with slogans & chants .
