  • However, during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1968, the "Cold War alliance" in the U.S. government broke up. The Vietnam issue was divided between democrat delegates from around the nation. The long-lasting presumption that the USA must stay in war was questioned by the group headed by Eugene McCarthy, a dedicated anti-war candidate. As the debate on the Convention floor heated, wars broke out, delegates and reporters were beat and struck. The delegates on the Status Quo side led by Hubert Humphrey, the then Vice President, dominated the events, but the convention events badly damaged the party that went.
  • Meanwhile, on the streets of Chicago, several thousand anti-war protesters gathered to show their support for McCarthy and the U.S. withdrawal of troops from Vietnam.
