Air is the one that can be compressed.

  • Compression is the process of applying force in-order to decrease or reduce the volume of a material and bring the particles of the body undergoing compression to come more closer together.
  • This force that is applied is balanced and is applied equally at all parts of the body undergoing compression, in an attempt for its particles to be more pressed together and to reduce the size of the body.
  • This is a process that can be applied to different states of matter namely solid, liquid and gas. Everything in this world is classified into these types.
  • Compression can be applied to bodies that are not already compressed or tightly packed and hence solids cannot be compressed further as the particles of a solid are already closely packed together.
  • This means that the intermolecular space between them is minimal. Thus, the wooden piece which is a solid material cannot be compressed. Similarly, iron in its solid state cannot be compressed for the same reasons.
  • However, when iron is in its molten state it obeys a property known as ductility which enables the metal to be bent or made into different shapes of different sizes.
  • The ability of the metal to take different forms is known as the ductile property of metals which iron  exhibits, in its molten form.
  • Molten is the state that lies between a solid and a liquid, that is, the distance between the particles are slightly more in molten state when compared to solids. So molten iron can be compressed to a certain extent but not completely.
  • Water which is a liquid is said to be incompressible at least when under normal conditions. However they may be compressed under extreme conditions of temperature and pressure and used in the industries.
  • Air is a gas and it is known that the molecules of gas are widely spaced and hence the intermolecular spaces between the gas particles is the largest when compared with solids and liquids.
  • Since, the particles are not closely spaced or packed, the gas molecules are free to move around everywhere.
  • Thus, air is the one that can be compressed to a large extent to either convert it into liquid form or solid form by applying pressure. Thus air is the correct option.
