The following can be easily oxidized
Explanation:
Oxidation
It refers to loss of electrons by an element .
This element that looses electrons is said to be Reducing agent as it reduces others and itself gets oxidised .
For example :
In given reaction :
Na + Cl---> NaCl
In this Na is getting oxidised (loosing electrons ) and Cl is getting reduced as it is accepting electrons .
Factors on which oxidation depends :
- Size of an atom : Bigger the size , more easily it gets oxidised .
- Nuclear charge of an atom : Lesser is the charge ,more easily it gets oxidised
- Electronic configuration of an atom : Lesser is the unstability in its configuration , more easily it gets oxidised
- Ionisation energy of an atom : Less is the ionisation energy ,more easily it gets oxidised
In periodic table , the groups on extreme left that is group 1 and 2 can get easily oxidised due to above discussed factors .
