(a) Blood is the component of the human body which is directly involved in the process of dialysis.
Dialysis:
When the kidney is unable to function normally, artificial dialysis is done to remove the wastes and excess fluids from the body to maintain the health of the patient.
Hemodialysis:
- In the dialysis treatment, the blood is passed through an external filter called the 'dialyzer' which is also called as the 'artificial kidney'.
- The treatment involves placing two needles in the same arm of the patient which are attached to a soft tube connected to the dialysis machine.
- During the process of dialysis, the blood of the patient leaves from one needle into the filter and then returns back to the body through the other vein.
- While the blood travels through the filter, which consists of thin hollow fibres between which a dialysis solution passes through, impurities and wastes from the blood passes into the dialysis solution. Now the cleaned blood passes back to the body.
