Good acoustic design requires knowledge of the physics of sound, the engineering qualities of materials, and the unique attributes of music and then applying this knowledge to building construction to create a facility that allows listeners to have an outstanding aural experience.

Answer:

Consider an exhaust system. The acoustic performance of the first silencer will depend on the acoustic load imposed on it. That load is the combined acoustic impedance of the remainder of the exhaust system downstream of the first silencer. Therefore, the acoustic performance of the first silencer depends on where in the system it is placed (hence a silencer that performs in a certain way on the flow bench, may behave differently on the vehicle). This is illustrated in Figure 3.27 (Z is the acoustic impedance, the ratio of acoustic pressure to acoustic volume velocity).
