Long stick is good enough such as a float (these are actually two most common tools in the Russian industry, believe me or not) but often a big container is buried in the ground so there's only the cover on the surface.And if the tank get tilted eventually you'll get a serious error in your measuring. Some technical device is needed here so the question is what physical effects should it based on?
