  • The organic compound which is composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen and which does not contain hydrogen and oxygen in the ratio of 2:1, is called fat.  
  • Lipids are actually a class of lipid-like substances. Lipids differ in chemical composition and physical properties from other lipids.
  • Lipid molecules are intimately involved in the molecular structure and metabolism of life. They are an important part of the diet of parasites (including humans).
  • Fats available for human consumption include margarine, butter, lard, and animal fats. After ingestion of lipids, they are broken down into lipase in the body.
  • An adult needs about 50 grams of dietary fiber per day. Fat is bad, unhealthy—a common misconception. But there are good fats too.  Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are beneficial for our health.  Apart from that, a balanced diet should contain all types of nutrients in proper combination. None should be left out.
  • Monounsaturated fats play a role in supporting cell growth, keeping cholesterol levels stable, and reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke. Avocados, nuts and various vegetable oils (canola, olive, peanut, sesame oil) are good sources of monounsaturated fats.
  • Polyunsaturated fats, on the other hand, are mainly found in vegetable oils (sunflower, sesame, soybean, corn) and marine fish.  Eating these fats lowers LDL cholesterol levels.
