Answer: Northern Women
Explanation:
- The emergence of the civil war in several ways confronted Victorian domesticity ideology which had described men & women's lives during the antebellum era. In the Northern & Southern regions the war compelled women into public life in ways that a generation before them could hardly have imagined.
- However, during the Civil War , American women looked beyond their home at the world outside. Countless women joined & worked as nurses in the North & the South. Women played a major role in a war effort for the first time in American history. At the end of the war, several American definitions of 'true womenhood' had been broadened through these experiences.
- About 20,000 Northern women were more active in the fighting in the Party. White working class women & free and "enslaved women" from Africa and America served as launderettes, cooks and "matrons."
- In the year 1861, women & men mobilised enthusiastically for the cause with the "outbreak of war". In the "northern States", women are organising women support societies to provide Union troops with all they require - from foodstuffs (they baked, canned and they had planted fruit & vegetables the soldiers' ) to clothing (they were sewing and laundering uniforms, knitting socks& sglove, stitching blankets & embroidering quilts & pillowcases) or cash ( (they organised fundraising campaigns door-to-door, county fairs & performances of varied kinds so as to raise funds for medical supplies & other necessities)
- However most women decided to play a more active part in the war. They sought to find ways to work along the front lines, tending for injured soldiers & keeping the rest of the Union 's troops safe & secure, influenced by Florence Nightingale 's work during the Crimean war. They prevailed in June 1861 and the Federal govt decided to set up the US Sanitary Commission as a preventive hygienic & health service for the benefit of the army. The main objective of the Health Commission was the fight against preventive diseases & infections by enhancing conditions in army camp & hospitals (especially 'bad cookery' and poor hygiene).
