Estrogen (a) is a steroid hormone.

  • Steroid hormone is chemically a steroid which acts as a hormone.
  • These hormones are of two types- a. Corticosteroids ( Synthesized from the adrenal cortex) and b. Sex steroids (Synthesized from gonads and placenta).
  • These forms of hormones are lipids.
  • They can pass through the cell membrane as they are fat-soluble, and then bind to steroid hormone receptors.
  • Steroid hormones are bound to carrier proteins (serum proteins) that bind them and increase the hormones' solubility in water and are transported through the blood.
  • Estrogen is a sex hormone which acts for the development and regulation of the female reproductive system and secondary sex characteristics.
