What are examples of pigments?

  • Pigments are a group of inorganic compounds that are coloured and are completely or nearly insoluble in water. They are used to make paints, fabric and cosmetics.
  • Chlorophyll: It is the most abundant pigment found in all green plants. It is a photosynthetic pigment that absorbs certain rays of the sun which is needed for different processes in the plant.
  • Haemoglobin: Haemoglobin is an iron containing pigment found in red blood cells of animals. It has a high affinity for oxygen and enables the blood cells to carry high concentration of oxygen to tissues.
  • Melanin: It is a group of pigments found in almost all organisms. The hair, skin and eye colour depend on the amount of melanin contained in the body.
