Well before even the grouped independence of the milestone year 1960, first signs of getting together among the young African States were seen almost everywhere in Africa including in West Africa. Hence the Guinea-Ghana Union as early as 1959, the Mali Federation bringing together as many as four countries of the former French West Africa (FWA)[2]. In response to the Mali Federation project, the Sahel-Benin Union which later became the Conseil de l’Entente was established in May 1959 under the leadership of Côte d’Ivoire. On the East Africa side, groupings were belated but soon in June 1963, Julius Nyerere’s Republic of Tanganyika, Jomo Kenyatta’s Kenya and Milton Obote’s Uganda created the East Africa Federation and the list is far from being exhaustive!

In such a context, the advent of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) p, 25 May, 1963 in Addis-Ababa and its later transformation into the African Union (AU) appear to be the culmination of a process. Therefore, one should wonder about the intrinsic theories behind this natural trend of African countries to create supranational groupings in spite of the yet perfectible results.
