What happens to blood at high altitudes?

• At high altitudes like Ladakh, the amount of oxygen is less in the atmosphere.
• This results in low oxygen binding capacity of haemoglobin which further causes tissue hypoxia i.e. lack of oxygen in tissues.

• To compensate for this, our body increases the rate of RBC production.
• The affinity of haemoglobin for oxygen decreases.
• At high altitudes, people experience palpitations, nausea, vomiting and anaemia in severe cases.
