(a) Increase in red blood cell production is exhibited by the tourist visiting high altitude areas such as Ladakh.
What happens to blood at high altitudes?
- At high altitudes like Ladakh, the amount of oxygen is less in the atmosphere.
- This results in low oxygen binding capacity of haemoglobin which further causes tissue hypoxia i.e. lack of oxygen in tissues.
- To compensate for this, our body increases the rate of RBC production.
- The affinity of haemoglobin for oxygen decreases.
- At high altitudes, people experience palpitations, nausea, vomiting and anaemia in severe cases.
