BRANCHED ALKANES and ALKYL GROUPS.

When naming branched alkanes by IUPAC rules, identify and name the longest continuous carbon chain first. Then identify the branch, or branches. The branches are called alkyl groups. For example, a one carbon branch is called a methyl group.

A neutral Alkyl is not a  branched-chain alkyl group.

What are the properties of the alkyl group?

  • When hydrogen is removed from the alkane chain then an alkyl group is formed
  • Methyl is the smallest group in this group
  • High octane gasoline is produced by alkylation
  • In alkyl chain is described by carbon atoms present in it
  • The neutral alkyl is the free alkyl like cation and anion
  • The alkyl chains are present in a chemical compound
