Complete question:

Which of the following is not an application of electrophoresis?

a) Separation of proteins

b) Separation of amino acids

c) Separation of lipids

d) Separation of nucleic acids

c) Separation of lipids is not an application of electrophoresis.

Electrophoresis definition:

"Electrophoresis is a laboratory technique used to separate DNA, RNA, or protein molecules based on their size and electrical charge."

Mechanism of electrophoresis:

  • In the process of electrophoresis, a gel medium is placed in a container which contains the reactive molecules.
  • It is also applicable in biologic molecules like DNA and RNA, such biologic molecules-based electrophoresis are called as capillary electrophoresis.
  • Then electric current is passsed through the gel which enables the movement of the molecules in the gel towards the respective positive and negative electrodes.
  • Also the gel has pores in them, which acts like a sieve by allowing the smaller molecules to travel faster than the larger molecules. Hence the electrophoresis can be controlled accordingly, to capture selectively the required molecules .
