Maslow's Need Hierarchy Theory of Motivation

One important theory of motivation is Maslow's Hierarchy Theory. The theory is based on the hierarchy of needs. According to Maslow, there are five kinds of needs . Physiological Needs, Safety Needs, Social Needs, Esteem Needs, Self Actualization Needs.

i) Basic Physiological Needs :

These needs are the most basic in the hierarchy and corresponds to primary needs. Hunger, thirst, shelter, are some examples.

ii ) Safety / Security Needs :

These needs provide security and protection from physical and emotional harm. Eg - job Security, pension plans etc

iii ) Affliation / Social Needs :

These needs refer to affection, acceptance, friendship etc.

iv ) Esteem Needs :

These include factors such as self-respect , recognition, attention etc.

v ) Self Actualization Needs :

It is the highest level of need in the hierarchy. These needs include growth, self - fullfillment and and achievement of goals.
