Decline of the Harappan civilization:

  • An earthquake: Some scholars have shown that the Indus area lies in the disturbed seismic zone. Earthquake might have reached the plains of the lower Indus river.

  • Ecological crisis caused by deforestation: A growing population needed enormous quantities of wood to produce jewellery furniture, etc. This leads to deforestation - millions of trees were cut down. As forests were removed floods and droughts occur. According to some writers such an ecological crisis led to the collapse of Harappan urban culture.
