Calcium phosphide Ca3P2 reacts instantly on the addition of water H2O on it, giving out Calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)3 and Phosphine PH3. 

This Phosphine reacts with the atmospheric Oxygen O2 and catches fire immediately, giving out Phosphorous pentoxide P2O5 and water molecules. 

This Phosphorus pentoxide is produced in the form of white smoke and thus creates the smoke screen
