Pilgrims and Puritans established the colony of Massachusetts in order to gain religious freedom of England.  Pilgrims preferred to stay in Plymouth but the Puritans moved to Massachusetts.  Most of these new settlers were from families of religious background.  They were trying to establish a colony in Massachusetts instead of trying to earn money.
