Some of the molecules deviate from octet rule when the central atom contains more/less than 8 electrons in its outer (valence) shell.

Examples of expanded octet compounds:

  • SF_{6}

  • IF_{7}

  • PCl_{5}

Examples of electron deficient compounds:

  • BCl_{3}

Usually the group 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 elements like Sulphur , Phosphorus , Halogens can form expanded octet compounds.

On the other hand , the elements of group 13 like Barium can form octet deficient compounds.

Hope It Helps.
