Phosphorus Penta-fluoride has two types of P-F Bond length.

First of all , refer to the attached diagram in order to understand the structure of Phosphorus Penta-fluoride.

  • We can see that there are three P-F bonds present in the plane.

  • And there are two P-F bonds present perpendicular to the plane.

The axial P-F bonds present perpendicular to the plane have higher Bond length as compared to those present in the equatorial plane.

  • This is because , the axial bonds have lesser s orbital character and hence lesser orbital overlap.
