Given:

A number when added to it's square gives 342.

To find:

The number.

Solution:

Let the number be x.

According to the question if x is added to it's square it gives 342.

Therefore the equation will be as follows:

 {x}^{2}  + x = 342

Taking 342 on the other side.

 {x}^{2}  + x - 342 = 0

By factorization method:

 {x}^{2}  + 19x - 18x - 342 = 0

x(x + 19) - 18(x + 19) = 0

(x + 19)(x - 18) = 0

x =  - 19 \: and \: 18

Therefore the number will be either 18 or it would be -19.
