Chloroplast contains DNA, divides and is semi-autonomous. (option C)

  • Chloroplasts are photosynthetic organelles found only in the leaves of green plants. They contain chlorophyll which absorbs light rays. The organelle also has its own genome.
  • The DNA in the chloroplast is circular with many repetitive sequences. Each chloroplast may have up to 120 circular DNA molecules. They can divide by rolling circle mechanism, similar to prokaryotes.
  • The chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) can undergo transcription and translation to synthesise proteins and enzymes it requires during photosynthesis. However, it uses enzymes even from the nuclear genome, making it semi-autonomous.
  • The enzyme RuBisCo has 4 subunits- two synthesized in the chloroplast and two in the nucleus.
