I’m assuming you are talking about collisions. In an elastic collision — say, between billiard balls — both kinetic energy and momentum are conserved. In an inelastic collision — between rubber balls for example — momentum is conserved but kinetic energy is not, having gone into the motion of the atoms making up the colliding particles.
