Excess glucose is taken up from the blood, converted into glycogen and stored by the liver, under the influence of the hormone insulin, thus causing a decrease in blood glucose levels. If blood glucose levels become too low, glucagon (pancreatic hormone) is released, which causes the liver to convert the stored glycogen back into glucose, and release it into the bloodstream.
