Answer:

Zirconium [Zr] or Titanium [Ti] metal is refined by Van Arkel method. Impure metal is converted to tetra iodide which is then decomposed to pure metal.

Van Arkel method is used for refining metals like Zirconium [Zr] or Titanium [Ti] metals using the decomposition of the volatile iodide at a high temperature.

- First, the impure metal is converted into volatile metal iodide by heating with iodine in an evacuated container.

- Then this volatile metal iodide is decomposed by using an electrically maintained tungsten filament at about 1800 K to get the pure metal.

- For example:

Zr (Impure) + 2 I₂ → ZrI₄

ZrI₄ → Zr (Pure) + 2 I₂
