Which of the following reaction is possible? Explain giving suitable example.
1) Zn(s) + CuSO4(aq) --> ZnSO4 + Cu(s)
2) Fe(s) + ZnSO4 (aq) --> FeSO4 (aq) + Zn(s)
3) Zn(s) + FeSO4 (aq) --> ZnSO4 (aq) + Fe (s)

Answer:

The following reactions are possible :- 1) and 3)

Explanation:

We can see that these are double displacement reactions.

We know that in double displacement reactions, a more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from its salt solution.

In the following reactions,

1) Zn + CuSO4 --> ZnSO4 + Cu  We know that Zn is more reactive than Cu hence it will displace it from it's compound and the reaction is possible.

2)  Fe + ZnSO4  --> FeSO4 + Zn We know that Fe is less reactive than Zn hence it cannot displace it from it's compound and the reaction is not possible.

3)  Zn + FeSO4  --> ZnSO4 + Fe We know that Zn is more reactive than Fe hence it will displace it from it's compound and the reaction is possible.
