Which of the following reactions of Cu2+ is an example of a chelation reaction ?
(A) [Cu (H20)6]2+ + 2OH- → [Cu(H20),(OH)2] + 2 H20
(B) [Cu(H20)61' + (CO3)2 → CuCO2+ 6H20
(C) [Cu(H20)612+ + (EDTA)- → [CuEDTA]2- + 6H20
(D) [Cu(H20)6]2+ + 2NH, → [Cu(H2O).(OH)2] + 2 NH

Option c i an example of chelation reaction with Cu2+.

  • Chelation reaction is the equilibrium reaction between a metal ion and a complexing agent, which forms one or more bonds between the metal and a molecule of that complexing  agent and results in the formation of a ring structure including the metal ion in it.
  • Since when Cu2+ reacts with EDTA then only a ring like structure can be formed in which CU2+ is incorporated therefore option c is the correct on.
