During the years 1865 – 66, after the American Civil War, the ‘Black Codes’ were passed in the Southern states of United States.  

The ‘Black Codes’ were laws passed, to restrict freedom of the Blacks, forcing them to work for low wages in inhospitable conditions. It also denied them several basic rights like the right to education and the right to vote.
