Oxygen is the species that absorb maximum energy in its HUMO - LUMO electronic transition due to the following reasons:

- HOMO stands for highest occupied molecular orbital where as LUMO stands for lower unoccupied molecular orbital. But LUMO is higher in energy then HOMO.

- HOMO - LUMO gap converges that make excitations easier such that in case of aromatic compounds and transition metals complexes.

- Greater is the distribution of of the energy throughout the molecules stabilizing it the greater will be the mobility of pie electrons.

- Out of oxygen, nitrogen and carbon oxygen has the greater mobility of Pie electrons. Hence, there will be smaller HOMO - LUMO gap.

- Smaller HOMO- LUMO gap correspond to higher or better stability

- So. oxygen have better stability as compared to other three elements and and have absorb maximum energy.
