☆☆Which of the following statement for an object in uniform motion is not true:

(a) The object must be moving in straight path along same direction

(b) The object covers equal displacements in equal intervals of time

(c) The velocity of object changes by equal amounts in equal intervals of time like free fall under gravity.

(d) The acceleration of object must be zero

The Wrong Statement:

  • The velocity of object changes by equal amounts in equal intervals of time like free fall under gravity. (OPTION c).

But why?

UNIFORM MOTION means:

  • The object has constant velocity and hence the acceleration has to be zero.
  • Since the velocity is constant the object travels equal displacements in equal intervals of time.
  • Also, the object has to travel in straight line.

But in option c) , it means that the velocity of the object is changing with respect to time and hence the motion becomes accelerated and NON-UNIFORM.

To have a constant velocity, an object must have a constant speed in a constant direction. Constant direction constrains the object to motion to a straight path. Newton's second law (F=ma ) suggests that when a force is applied to an object, the object would experience acceleration.
