The false statement about weathering is- the presence of soil slows down the weathering of the underlying bedrock.
Let us understand what a weathering process is-
- Weathering is the process of disintegration of rocks into smaller pieces by weathering agents that can be physical, chemical or biological.
Factors affecting weathering of rocks are:
- The rate of weathering of exposed rock is high as it frequently comes in contact with weathering agents.
- The chemical weathering causes chemical reactions inside the rocks and changes their composition. High temperature and high rainfall support chemical weathering.
- Different rocks have different compositions and hence, different weathering rates. The rocks that contain soft minerals are weathered faster as compared to rocks that contain hard minerals.
Note: The presence of soil above the rocks does not much affect the rate of weathering as the soil has finer particles that are eroded easily by erosional agents such as wind.
