Lead is a powerful inhibitor of δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD), copropor-phyrinogen oxidase, and ferrochelatase,  an enzymes that catalyze the 2nd, 6th, and final steps, correspondingly, in the biosynthesis of heme. Since the metal has the utmost effect on ALAD, extent of ALAD activity can be used as a marker of influence of lead exposure.  ALAD, an octameric zinc-comprising enzyme, catalyzes the condensation of two molecules of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) into one molecule of monopyrrole porphobilinogen (PBG). Inhibition of ALAD activity produces augmented urinary excretion of ALA.
