c. Metal oxides are either basic or amphoteric in nature.
- Generally, most of the metal oxides are basic. They react with acids to form salt and water.
- When these metal oxides react with water to form metal hydroxides then these metal hydroxides release OH- ions in solution which proves metal oxides are basic.
- Examples of basic metal oxides are Na2O, CuO etc.
- However, in some cases, metal oxides can react both with bases as well as acids. Such types of metal oxides are called Amphoteric oxides. One common example is Al2O3.
- Hence, metal oxides are either basic or amphoteric in nature.
