velocity means displacement in time whereas acceleration means velocity in time both are vector quantities that they have both magnitude and a specific direction so that it determines the direction of the position of moving of an object therefore conventionally both acceleration and velocity determine the direction velocity and negative velocity denoted by - and acceleration and retardation are opposite to each other
