the mustard oil reaction is only given by primary amine.

this test is perform in amines for distinuguish between primary,secondary and tertiary amine.

the reagent used in this test are generally CS2 and HgCl2 .

when primary amines reacts with CS2 and HGcl2 it gives isocynthates having smell like mustard oil.

when secondary amines reacts with CS2  to form dithiocarbamic acids but fail to react with Mercuric chloride.and teriary amines can not react with CS2 and HgCl2
