The system of imperial units or the imperialsystem (also known as British Imperial[1] orExchequer Standards of 1825) is the systemof units first defined in the British Weightsand Measures Act of 1824, which was laterrefined and reduced. The Imperial unitsreplaced the Winchester Standards, whichwere in effect from 1588 to 1825.[2] Thesystem came into official use across theBritish Empire. By the late 20th century, mostnations of the former empire had officiallyadopted the metric system as their mainsystem of measurement, although someimperial units are still used in the UnitedKingdom, Canada and other countriesformerly part of the British Empire. Theimperial system developed from what werefirst known as English units, as did therelated system of United States customaryunits.
