Option C i.e Its leaders began the Counter-Reformation is the correct answer.

When the Protestant reformation movement began to spread and exposed the defaults in Catholic Church, The Catholic leaders started the counter reformation and tried to reform the Church within. It tried to train the priests and return to adoption of spirituality and traditions and teachings of Christ. It didn't removed the Pope as head of Church but Pope Paul III resigned who is considered to be the first Pope of Counter Reformation.
