We have to check one one among the following would behave the most like an ideal gas when confined to a 5.0 L container :

  1. 1 mol of Ne at 800 K
  2. 5 mol of Ne at 300 K
  3. 1 mol of CO₂ at 800 K
  4. 5 mol of CO₂ at 300 K

concept : Most of the real gases behave ideal characters when temperature is high and pressure is low.

from the above statement options (2) and (4) already cancelled out. because both have low temperature.

now we have to check the pressure of the remaining options (1) and (3),

option (1) : no of moles , n = 1

temperature, T = 800K

volume, V = 5 L

using formula, PV = nRT

⇒P = (1 × R × 800)/(5) = 160R ...(1)

option (2) : n = 1 mol , T = 800K, V = 5 L

so, P = (1 × R × 800)/5 = 160R ...(2)

here pressures are same so we don't get the conclusion for ideal gas behaviour, do we ?

now here you should notice that, Ne is inert gas and CO₂ is a compound and it can be liquified easily at low pressure. but Ne can't be liquified easily because intermolecular interactions between two Me atoms is very weak. they nearly behaves like an ideal gas [ because Fundamental theory of an ideal gas is interaction between molecules must be negligible ].

Therefore the correct option is (1) 1 mol Ne at 800K.
