Polyethylene is not a conducting polymer.
- Conducting polymers (also called ICPs) can conduct electricity.
- In polyethylene (Monomer: H₂C=CH₂) the valence electrons are sp³ hybridized (i.e. are sigma bonded).
- Such electrons have low mobility and do not contribute to the electrical conductivity thus it is an insulator.
- Polypyrrole (Monomer: C₄H₄NH), Polyaniline (Monomer: C₆H₅NH₂), and Polyacetylene (Monomer: C₂H₂) are all good conductors of electricity.
- These polymers have π bonds and thus the electrons have higher mobility.
