Which of the gases among o2 co2 and so2 under similar conditiins diffuses slower than no2 gas
Answers
which one the following gases (O₂ , CO₂ and SO₂) diffuses slower than NO₂ gas ?
solution : according to Graham's law of diffusion, the rate of diffusion of gas is inversely proportional to the square root of its density under similar conditions of temperature and pressure.
and we know, the density of an ideal gas is given by, ρ = PM/RT
as P and T are constant here.
so ρ ∝ M ( molar mass)
∴ the rate of diffusion of gas ∝ 1/√molar mass.
it means higher the value of molar mass, lower the value of the rate of diffusion will be.
let's see the molar mass of each gas.
molar mass of NO₂ = 46 g/mol
molar mass of O₂ = 32 g/mol
molar mass of CO₂ = 44 g/mol
molar mass of SO₂ = 64 g/mol
∴ here only molar mass of SO₂ is bigger than that of NO₂. so it is the only gas among the following the diffusion rate of which is slower than that of NO₂.
therefore the rate of diffusion of SO₂ gas is slower than that of NO₂.
