answer : CH4 diffuses faster
explanation : diffusion of gases depend upon density of gas molecules or molecular weight of gases molecules.
according to Graham's law of diffusion,
rate of diffusion of a gas is inversely proportional to square root of its Molecular weight.
i.e., r ∝ 1/√M
means, higher the molecular weight, rate of diffusion will be lower.
given, gases are N2O2 and CH4
molecular weight of N2O2 = (2 × 14 + 2 × 16) = 28 + 32 = 60g/mol
molecular weight of CH4 = 12 + 4 × 1 = 16 g/mol
molecular weight of CH4 is lower than that of N2O2.
so, rate of diffusion of CH4 must be higher that that of N2O2.
hence, CH4 gas diffuses faster
