Sati was an ill practice that involved the burning of a woman alive along with her husband, who was dead. It was known that many people voluntarily accepted Sati while others refused. Raja Rammohan Roy was a social reformer who was against Sati he wrote many books and journals speaking against this malpractice. When William Bentinck became the governor-general of Bengal in 1828 he helped Raja Rammohan in his campaign and banned the practice of Sati in Bengal.
